Beautiful Japan—from coast to coast

SHIGA:The Origins of Japan

Only in Shiga
Kyoto is famous around the planet, but for the discerning traveler, Shiga’s own world of nature and culture is only a short side trip away. From the calm majesty of Lake Biwa to the living history found in temples, shrines, and other locations redolent with Japanese heritage and the arts, Shiga is a must for those seeking to go beyond the ordinary.

Uncovering a Hidden World

Matchless Nature and Heritage

Built 400 years ago, Hikone Castle is a national treasure and one of Japan’s last remaining authentic feudal strongholds. The glittering Lake Biwa is visible from the castle’s lofty heights, and the area is renowned for its cherry trees, which number around 1,100. Although the site is a feast for the eyes in every season, the trees display their famous blossoms most conspicuously in the spring when they are celebrated during the Sakuramatsuri Festival.

Unforgettable Activities
Whether soaring aboveground on the Zip Line Adventure attraction, exploring ski trails that accommodate every skill level, or just taking in a panoramic view from the terrace, there is something for everyone at Biwako Valley. Whereas those with a taste for ninja history and aesthetics won’t want to miss the Koka Ninja Village. Deep in the forest, you can watch staff demonstrate ninja moves, or explore for yourself trapdoors, hidden compartments, and even a throwing star (shuriken) range and an obstacle course.

Sizzling Surprises
Shiga is home to mouth-watering regional cuisine that you can sample fresh from the source. At the Samegai Trout Farm, in addition to eating, you can fish, feed, or simply sit back and enjoy the sights of Biwa salmon, a fish native to this region’s waters. Shiga is also a prime spot for fresh wagyu beef, considered by many to be one of the best in Japan, from certified Omi Beef cattle.

Charting Your Journey

With so much to see and do, the opportunities to enjoy a truly Japanese experience in Shiga can almost seem overwhelming. But with the following four travel packages, you are guaranteed to get the most out of your trip to this fascinating prefecture.

History and Heritage
Once home to the largest shine-temple multiplex in Japan, Mount Hiei today is a tranquil forested area dotted with multiple traditional institutions. There are several spiritual practices available to the public and overnight temple stays are offered, followed by tranquil morning routines. Guests at Mii-dera Temple can don the distinctive robes of the mountain ascetics (Yamabushi) and travel on a journey of spiritual training ranging over the mountains in the area. There are even opportunities to observe the sacred Goma fire ritual performed in the Kannon-do Hall. The Hikone Castle samurai experience offers a chance to plumb the mysteries of the normally closed off Goshoin area, participate in a guided tour of the castle’s features and landscape, and engage in a formal tea ceremony. At the Kajiyacho district in Nagahama City, you can plunge into the fiery world of ancient Japanese blacksmithing, creating your own paper knife under the guidance of a skilled expert.

Arts and Crafts
The joys of Japanese visual culture come alive in Shiga when you see and experience its multifaceted wonders for yourself. Shiga is home to some of Japan’s most famous historical ceramic kilns, and Shigaraki pottery found great favor among the tea ceremony masters of old Kyoto. At the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, guided walking tours and encounters with artists-in-residence can deepen appreciation of Shiga’s exquisite art forms. Here there are pottery workshops that impart direct experience for both adults and children, and you can even stay overnight in a renovated traditional house, with a viewable industrial heritage climbing kiln close by.

In Shiga’s Otsu community, a truly special and completely private nighttime tour of the Shiga Museum of Art is led by the director and several art experts. Explore both special and permanent collections in depth, and uncover the seldom-seen museum storage areas filled with artistic gems. The works of artist Yuki Ogura (1895–2000) are a particular highlight of this world-class museum that you can encounter on this singular tour.

Nature and the Outdoors
Shiga’s verdant forests and the glistening waters of Lake Biwa are paradises for outdoor enthusiasts. Those looking to get to know the lake better will doubtless find pleasure in a gentle SUP (stand-up paddle) journey. The ride is stable and smooth, and the pace makes it suitable for those of all ages. After traversing the waters of the lake, the ride finishes near Shirahige-jinja Shrine’s famous floating torii gate. Don’t miss the chance to meditate and practice forest-bathing yoga at the highest point of Mt. Konze, where a 1,300-year-old temple reposes high in the crisp, clean air. The session concludes with a cup of tea together with the instructor.

Another must-see is Chikubushima Island, home to historic temples, shrines, and other architectural treasures. It can be accessed by ferry from points around the lake.

Local Culture
Often overshadowed by Japan’s conspicuous warrior history and religious structures are the everyday culture and customs of daily life in old Japan, shaped by merchants, farmers, and local colorful characters. Shiga presents many opportunities to get a feel for their lives and habits. Idle away some time relaxing on a traditional vessel as you travel along Hachimanbori moat, a waterway that connects to Lake Biwa and features a rotating seasonal medley of natural scenery. You can also explore the surrounding areas, including a shrine and some traditional shops, with a local guide who will tailor the walk to your desires. At a kimono shop, you can choose and be fitted for your favorite garment and then capture your new look in stunning photos. In the Higashiomi Area, a firsthand traditional weaving experience lets you feel the rhythms of days gone by, and a rickshaw ride over the streets of Hino, which ends at the stately Watamuki-jinja Shrine, is the perfect way to top off your day.
